Kemble Women’s Institute Continues to Enrich the Community
The Kemble Women’s Institute (KWI) continues to honour their legacy spanning more than 100-years, proving that the spirit of giving is timeless. The KWI is an active social group comprised of approximately 20 members, who meet monthly to advocate for home and country in the community. KWI is the oldest active institute in the world, now in its 128th year!
According to the group, the first women’s institute started in Stoney Creek, Ontario and WI’s have since expanded worldwide, growing to a membership of 9 million people. Residents and visitors are encouraged to stop by the stunning view at the Kemble Women’s Institute Lookout, as shown in the photo above. It is located at the S bend on Grey Road 1 south of the Village of Kemble. There you can read into the history of KWI including how the founder Clara Gardner started the organization.
The institute is rich in history in Kemble and the surrounding area, with 2nd, 3rd and 4th generation members, although having history with WI’s is not required and membership is open to all. “My great grandmother was the first treasurer and now here I am the president,” says Dianne Carlson, KWI President. The KWI generally meets once a month, at the Kemble Sarawak United Church, discussing community initiatives and advocating for local community needs. The members have catered refreshments to residents and local groups, supported initiatives, such as donating hygiene bags to third world countries and learned from speakers on a variety of topics.
