Join the FoodCycler Pilot Program - Help Reduce Organic Waste
The Township of Georgian Bluffs is looking for residents to take part in an exciting pilot program to help divert food waste from landfill using FoodCycler indoor composting devices.
The Township has partnered with Food Cycle Science to offer this innovative indoor composting technology to 100 residents at a discounted rate, which will allow them to compost food waste quickly and easily in their own homes. The FoodCycler unit heats and grinds food waste into a dry, odourless, nutrient-dense by-product that is significantly smaller. Not only does this help to reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill, but the nutrient-rich compost can be used in gardens and houseplants.
Participants are asked to track the amount of waste they're diverting over a 12-week period using a handy tracking sheet provided by the Township. At the end of the 12 weeks, there will be a closing survey to share experiences and give feedback on the program. The FoodCycler is then yours to keep.
"We appreciate the opportunity to bring this program into Georgian Bluffs’ homes,” said Mayor Sue Carleton. "Reducing how much waste we send to landfill helps shrink our carbon footprint, so we look forward to getting an idea of the potential environmental impact of this technology in our community.”
Starting units are available for $150 or $300 plus HST depending on capacity, with 100 spots available on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration is now open, and the units will be available for pickup on July 15th, 2023 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Shallow Lake Arena and Community Centre.
