Note: There are no seasonal weight restrictions currently in place.

Seasonal Weight Restrictions

Weight restriction season typically happens in the spring of each year. Georgian Bluffs restricts the operation of motor vehicles on all Township roads for vehicles that are heavier than 5,000 kilograms, or five tonnes, per axle. Weight restrictions are enacted under the authority of the Highway Traffic Act.

Preventing Road Damage

Weight restrictions prevent damage to Township roads.

In the spring, frozen roads start to thaw. The thawing water may not drain out of the road because the surrounding soil may be frozen or too solid. Instead, the water will soak into the gravel road base. When the water is absorbed, the pavement will temporarily lose strength. When this happens, the pavement cannot support vehicles that are heavier than 5,000 kilograms or five tonnes per axle.

Start and End Dates

The 2024 weight restriction for roads began on Friday, March 1, 2024. The weight restrictions are typically in place until May 1, however the end date may be extended until May 31 based on road and weather conditions.

Seasonal Weight Restrictions will be shown on this page when in effect, as well as on Municipal 511.
