Fibre Installation Project

Fibre is coming to Georgian Bluffs! EH!tel Networks Inc. is leading the installation of fibre optic infrastructure to bring faster, more reliable internet to rural areas that need it most.

Project Overview

This project is funded through the SWIFT initiative (SouthWestern Integrated Fibre Technology), which is supported by federal and provincial governments. The installation is focused on areas that currently lack access to minimum internet speeds of 50 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload.

EH!tel was selected by the province through a competitive bidding process to carry out this installation in Geogrian Bluffs.

Timeline and Areas Covered

The project will roll out in phases:

  • Fall 2024: Fibre installation begins in the South/West areas of the Township, including Kilsyth, Alvanley, Jackson, Springmount, Shallow Lake, and Hepworth areas. See the map below for more details.
  • Spring 2025: The next phase will extend into the North/East areas of the Township, including Wolseley, Kemble, Zion, Big Bay, Lindenwood, Copperkettle, Hogg, East Linton, Balmy Beach, and Benallen areas.

What to Expect During Installation

As the fibre installation gets underway, you may see workers allong roadways and at the edge of your property. Please drive with extra caution when workers are present along the roads.

Before installation begins, workers will mark underground utilities like water, gas, and power lines using flags or paint. This helps prevent damage during construction. Please do not disturb these markers until installation is complete.

You’ll receive notice at least 24 hours before work starts on your street.

The first stage involves placing conduit—a protective tube for the fibre cables—underground. A thin trench will be dug from the roadway to your property. This will require some machinery, and a small crew will be present.

After the conduit is installed, any disturbed areas will be filled in and reseeded. This is the only phase that involves digging or machinery.

Once the conduit is in place, crews will return to pull the fibre cables through the underground tubing.

This part of the process is non-invasive and requires minimal work on your property.

When the fibre service is ready, you can contcat Eh!tel to set up a connection to your home. A technician will connect the weather-proof box outside to your home's interior and set up any necessary devices. Once completed, your fibre internet will be fully operational and ready for use!

Frequently Asked Questions

SWIFT (SouthWestern Integrated Fibre Technology) is a government-funded initiative to improve broadband access in underserved rural areas of Southwestern Ontario. It is funded through the Federal and Provincial governments. The goal is to bring reliable high-speed internet to areas lacking adequate service.

The areas chosen for this project were identified as having inadequate internet service, specifically falling below the government target of 50 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload speeds. Some areas of Georgian Bluffs were deemed to already have access to adequate internet service, and so they are not covered by this project.

If you are planning to sever part of your property to create a new lot, you can let EH!tel know in advance. They can arrange to drop a connection point during the installation phase, saving you future installation costs. Please get in touch at construction@corp.ehtel.com or call 519-594-0946 to advise Eh!tel if your future severance.

You can find the full coverage area included in this project on the Eh!tel Fibre Installation Map above. If you are still not sure if your areas is covered, please contact construction@corp.ehtel.com
